Reminder-St. Mary’s Cemetery hours are from 9 am-6 pm daily, 7 days a week. Gates are locked promptly at 6 PM. Effective Jan. 1st. 2023
Rules, Regulations, and Restrictions Regarding The Upkeep of the Lots and Graves in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Lockhart, Texas-(May 2023 Update)
Under the Code of Canon Law of the Roman Catholic Church and in Catholic theology, cemeteries are consecrated as sacred places, designated for driving worship or for the burial of the faithful. As sacred places, Catholic cemeteries are to be maintained with the same diligence given to churches. The holy resting grounds are to be dignified places where visitors may quietly and respectfully participate in prayer for the beloved departed in an appropriate manner consistent with the Catholic faith. It is the Church’s obligation under canon law to protect and foster the sacred character of Catholic cemeteries.
1. Permission of the Pastor, who is to decide the right of Christian Burial, must be obtained prior to the opening of any grave.
2. The lot or grave holders must, either personally or through others, keep their lots and, or graves neat and clean. Items such as lights, bird feeders, decorations, metal yard art, hangers, flag poles except small veteran flag holders, religious statues, crosses, benches and any other appurtenances are NOT permitted.
3. St. Mary’s Cemetery retains ownership rights outlining guidelines that are to be followed without exceptions. A burial space is NOT property owned by the HOLDER. The HOLDER acquires a right of burial in the cemetery in a specific location, known as the burial space, subject to the rules and procedures adopted.
4. Deceased MUST be a baptized Catholic to be interred at St. Mary’s. Effective as of this printing, due to limited space, plots at St. Mary’s Cemetery will be sold to St. Mary’s Parishioners and their immediate family members.
5. After the settlement of a new grave, the excess dirt must be disposed of, either by hauling it away or spreading it on the area designated by the cemetery authorities. The grave must be level with the ground. (No mounds.)
6. In case a grave is sand filled, the dirt must be disposed of before burial, either by hauling it away or spreading it on area designated by the Cemetery Authorities. Rocks or stones may not be spread on graves or open areas.
7. After due time, every grave should be marked with a permanent and uniform head-marker, made of stone or cement. Grave-markers of perishable nature are NOT permitted in the Cemetery and if placed on a grave or lot, they shall be removed without notice.
8. Curbing or edging of ANY kind is NOT permitted on graves or lots. The natural grass cover is NOT to be disturbed more than is necessary in the actual burial and at any other time. Shrubs, trees, or planted flowers are NOT permitted on lots or graves. Two flower arrangements per plot are permitted. Flowers may be placed ONLY at the head of a grave and must be arranged parallel to the headstone, or marker. Cemetery Authorities may remove any flower or vase in his/her discretion at any time.
9. Head-markers must be of uniform dimensions: 60 inches long, 14 inches wide and max 30 inches tall at the highest point above the foundation. (Exception: Servicemen may have the low type of the U.S. Government marker—24 x10 inches and 2 inches high. All markers must be set in a straight line in relation to all other markers.
10. All headstones require cement foundation before headstone is set and Cemetery Authorities must approve contractor. The uniform size of plots is 5’ by 10’ and liners are required.
11. NO work or construction of any type can be done on plots without approval of Cemetery Authorities. The Cemetery Authorities have the right to remove any structure, shrub, tree, flower, or other item at his/her discretion, included but not limited to any item that is offensive, improper, or that detracts from the appearance of the cemetery.
12. Social gatherings or parties at the Cemetery are prohibited. The gathering of those who are mourning or honoring the beloved dead is permitted only for prayer services, memorial services, burial services, or internment services that are conducted in accordance with conduct and decorum specified in these rules and as expected by the Roman Catholic Church. Alcoholic beverages are NOT allowed on premises at any time. Excessive celebrations, loud music, barbecuing, and sleeping on premises are NOT permitted. Pets of any type and livestock are NOT permitted on cemetery grounds.
13. The same rules apply to cremations. A small flat headstone is allowed on plots. If cremation ashes are to be placed on a plot of a deceased, Cemetery Authorities must approve location of headstone.
14. The Cemetery Committee may exercise any remedy available to it under Canon Law or Civil Law to enforce these rules and to ensure the peaceful use and enjoyment of the Cemetery as sacred property of the Church.
15. St. Mary’s Cemetery has the sole right and discretion to enforce the rules of the Cemetery including but not limited to prohibiting persons in violation of such rules from being present at or on the Cemetery grounds, removing any item that violates the rules, and exercising all lawful remedies

Bajo el Codigo de Derecho Canonico de la Iglesia Catolica Romana y en la teologia Catolica, cementerios son consagrados como lugares sagrados designados para conducir la adoracion o para el entierro de los fieles. Como lugares sagrados, los cementerios Catolicos deben ser mantenidos con la misma diligencia dada a las Iglesias. Los lugares sagrados de descanso deben ser lugares dignos donde los visitantes pueden tranquilamente y respetuosamente participar en la oracion por los difuntos amados de manera adecuada con la fe Catolica. Es obligacion de la Iglesia bajo el Codigo de Derecho Canonico proteger y fomentar el caracter sagrado de Cementerios Catolicos.

El titular adquiere un derecho de entierro en el cementerio en un lugar especifico conocido como el espacio de entierro con sujecion a las reglas y procedimientos adoptados.
4. Los difuntos deben ser Catolicos bautizados para ser enterrados en el Cemeterio de Santa Maria. Efectivo a partir de esta impresion, debido al espacio limitado, lotes y sepulturas deben ser comprados por parroquianos y miembros de su familia inmediata de la Iglesia de Santa Maria.
5. Despues de haber terminado una sepultura nueva, la tierra que sobra debe tirarse o destenderse en el lugar que las personas autorisadas le indiquen. La sepultura debe estar al nivel de la tierra. (NO se permite monticulos de tierra.)
6. En caso que quieren usar arena para llenar la sepultura, la tierra debe destenderse o tirarse antes del entierro en el lugar que las personas autorisadas le indiquen. Piedras o penascos NO se deben tirar en la tumba ni en espacios vacios.
7. Despues del tiempo debido, la sepultura debe marcarse con una marca permanente hecha ya sea de pedra, marmol o cemento. NO se permiten marcas de calidad indurable, y si las colocan en las sepulturas se quitaran sin advertencia.
8. NO se permite plantar ni sembrar arboles, arbustos, o flores en los lotes o sepulturas. NO se permite reborde de cemento o corte de cualquier clase en las sepulturas o lotes. El sacate natural NO debe molestarse mas de lo necesario, ni en el entierro o en cualquier otro tiempo. Se permite DOS arreglos florales artificiales por lote o sepultura. Las flores pueden ponerse solo en la cabecera de una tumba y deben ser arregladas paralelo al lapida o marcador. Los Autoridades del Cementerio pueden quitar cualquier flor o florero a su discrecion en cualquier momento.
9. Todas las lapidas deben ser del mismo tamano: 60 pulgadas de largo, 14 pulgadas de ancho, y maximo 30 pulgadas de altura. (Excepcion: Personas que sirvieron al gobierno se permite que tengan lapidas que el gobierno les pone a los soldados de los U. S. – 24 por 10 pulgadas y 2 pulgadas de alto). Todas las lapidas deben estar en una linea derecha en acuerdo con las demas lapidas en el cementerio.

La reunion de los que estan de luto o honrar a los muertos amados esta permitido solo para servicios de oracion, servicios conmemorativos, servicios de entierro, o servicios de internamiento que se lleven a cabo de acuerdo con la conducta y el decoro especificado en estas reglas y como lo espera la Iglesia Catolica Romana. Bebidas alcoholicas NO se permiten en el cementerio. Celebraciones excesivas, musica a todo volumen, parrilladas, y durmiendo en el cementerio NO se permiten. Mascotas de todo tipo y ganado NO se permiten en el cementerio.
13. Las mismas reglas aplican a cremaciones. Se permite una pequena lapida plana en la sepultura. Si ponen cenizas de cremacion en una sepultura de un fallecido, personas autorisadas tienen que aprobar la ubicacion de la lapida.
14. El Comite del Cementerio puede usar cualquier recurso a su alcance bajo el Derecho Canonico o el Derecho Civil para hacer cumplir estas reglas y garantizar el uso pacifico y el disfrute del cementerio como propiedad sagrada de las Iglesia.
